YOUR HOUSE IS THE BEST SHELTER IF WELL PREPARED

As the fire approaches

  • Dress in protective clothing (made from cotton or wool, NOT synthetics)
  • Drink water frequently
  • Plug downpipes and fill all guttering with water
  • Fill buckets, basins, baths and sinks with water
  • Make sure children and family pets are inside
  • Fit screens and close windows and shutters
  • Wet-down roof, house and garden, especially on the side of the approaching fire. Turn on sprinkler system, if you have one
  • Check roof cavity frequently for spot fires
  • Check under the house for spot fires & embers
  • Put out spot fires started by flying embers

Don't leave your home at the last moment!

During the fire

  • Go inside and close all windows and doors
  • Block all gaps and cracks under doors and around windows with wet towels
  • Close blinds and curtains
  • Stay inside until the main fire has passed
  • Check roof cavity frequently for spot fires

After the fire

  • After the fire has passed and for several hours after the fire front has passed, patrol your property & put out spot fires started by flying embers
  • Check roof cavity frequently for spot fires
  • Check under the house for spot fires & embers
